There are few things people like hearing less from their dentist than, “You need a root canal.” In the past, this procedure was quite complicated. Now, new techniques and technology has allowed this treatment to evolve into something far more comfortable. Think you might need root canal treatment? Read on to learn all about it.
What Exactly is Root Canal Treatment?
The goal of a root canal is to save a tooth that is either infected or badly decayed. When you have this procedure done, the tooth is emptied of its nerves and pulps. It is then thoroughly cleaned and sealed to prevent future infection. By the time your tooth needs this done, it is in pretty rough shape. Not having root canal treatment can cause the surrounding tissues to become infected and inflamed, further adding to your pain. The longer you wait to have a root canal, the higher the risk that your tooth will no longer be able to be saved.
Root Canal Treatment: Step by Step
This is a fairly straightforward process. The steps in this process are:
- The first step is to numb the area. In some cases, a dental dam may be used to help isolate the tooth and keep it dry during the treatment.
- A very small hole will be created in the top of your tooth. This allows for the tooth to be delicately cleaned out. It will be rinsed out with water to ensure that none of the infected pulp is left behind.
- A temporary filling is typically placed once the area has been cleaned and dried.
- You will come back in for your permanent crown a few weeks after your initial appointment. If need be, a small post can be placed to help support the crown.
After Root Canal Treatment
After your root canal treatment, you will want to ensure you are taking excellent care of your teeth. On top of coming in twice a year for cleanings, it may be recommended that you come in for X rays after your root canal. This allows us to make sure that all signs of the infection have cleared up. If you take good care of the tooth that had the root canal, there is no reason it cannot last you for the rest of your life.
