Everyone knows that you are supposed to brush twice and day and floss regularly, but how many people actually do it? There is more to a good oral hygiene routine than just a quick brushing in the morning and night. In order to get your mouth completely clean, it is important to do multiple things every day.
Brush Twice a Day (At Least!)
The first step in a good oral hygiene routine is to thoroughly brush your teeth. This should be done at least twice a day. For bonus points, brush after each and every meal. You should brush your teeth for two minutes. Mentally divide your mouth into four sections, and spend at least 30 seconds on each section. Pay special attention to the gum line.
Floss Once a Day
Flossing may not be the most exciting thing to do, but it is important to do it once a day. It prevents tiny food particles from hanging out in between your teeth, where they can cause cavities and gum disease. Follow the natural curve of your tooth to ensure you do not damage your gums.
Clean Your Tongue
Although it is a major part of the mouth, the tongue is neglected in many people’s oral hygiene routines. Cleaning your tongue should be done every time you brush, according to the American Dental Association. This helps to get rid of odor-causing bacteria, as well as remove any built-up plague. People who have many grooves in their tongues will want to take special care to keep it clean. Some people use their toothbrush, some use a clean piece of floss, and others buy a specialized tool called a tongue scraper.
After making sure you have dislodged all the stuff you do not want on your teeth, gums, and tongue, it is important to rinse it out. Using mouthwash is another important step toward keeping bad breath away. Always follow the directions on the mouthwash bottle when it comes to how long you should swish it around in your mouth. If you find yourself without any mouthwash, still rinse your mouth out with water when done brushing and/or flossing.
